He wasn't exactly in poor teams at Arsenal or Chelsea.
Obviously pointless, but i'd be willing to bet that Cole wouldn't have the same sort of numbers as Robbo, or Trent for that matter.
And it's not entirely down to the system (although it will definitely have an impact) as Robbo has 18 goals and assists for a gash Scotland team in 80 odd appearances, whilst Cole (somehow unbelievably) had zero assists or goals in 107 games for England.
As I say, it's a pretty close run thing both were excellent fullbacks.
Something, Something, Something, Dark Side
I don't agree and your methods for comparison are way off.
Cole playing for England - a side with infinitely better creative players and long before Klopp ball. Played as a traditional Left back. Ditto at Chelsea and Arsenal. No coincidence FB's today are playing a completely different game and posting completely different numbers.. Are they all better attackers? One might even say Robbo would have struggled in Cole's place.
There has been significant evolution in football tactics and the strategic role Full backs now play within teams. The shift from traditional defensive full-backs to attacking, playmaking threats is a direct result of evolving team formations and philosophies, particularly the widespread adoption of systems that prioritise width and fluid attacking play.
We look so much better and solid without him lads!!!!!!!
you lot called it right !
Yes - it's clear.. and we never expected to miss his defending. BUT his creativity was always the worry and so it's proved. Now Frimpong may well develop a better understanding with Mo.. IF Mo is still starting games... it's early days still..
But I think it's far bigger than just Trent. Look how many players have gone straight into that team. You can't do that and expect synergy. This is fundamentally a different team now. They will need to find out how to function at the elite level as a group in one of - if not the most the most competitive leagues in Europe.. This is where management comes in.. Do we have the staff to do that? I guess we will find out shortly
The non-negotiable should be the pressing. We won't achieve anything without that sense of urgency. At our best under Klopp we would swarm the opposition to get possession back. That's where Wini and Hendo came in. They weren't the most creative but once we got the ball back they then give it to the creative ones. In this team we have Grav who is good at breaking up play. Szobo to a lesser extent. Macca is in bad form right now. We really need a Mascherano player to do that job. Also, others are not pressing like they should be. Wirtz is not, Salah is not, Isak is not. Players like Grav and Szobo are doing a lot of the heavy lifting in the team right now.
From the moment I picked your book up until I laid it down, I convulsed with laughter. Someday I intend on reading it. Groucho Marx
