Erm.. both club legends and both with their contracts up..Originally posted by jozza800 View PostLike giving a 33 year old and 34 year old the two biggest contracts the club has ever handed out?
I get the irony, but you’re looking at those two deals in a vacuum. You have to look at the Diaz to Bayern move to see the full picture.
The reality is that Diaz was the "sacrificial lamb" that made the Mo and Virgil deals possible. If we don’t bank that £60m+ for Lucho while he’s still in his prime (28/29), there is no world where FSG sanctions record-breaking wages for two players deep into their 30s. The model just wouldn't allow it.
It’s basically a "Sentiment Tax." Let’s be honest - if the club had sold (let go) Mo or Virgil this summer, the fans would have been at the gates with pitchforks. They aren’t just players; they’re the entire spine and culture of the club. Keeping them was a PR and leadership necessity, but it’s expensive.
Same situation as when they tried the ST price hike.
Same situation when they tried their ESL.. Remember..?
By cashing in on Diaz at his absolute peak value, they recouped the loss of giving big money to our aging legends. The club had stalled on contracts for all 3 don't forget - only Trent was unswayed.
Cleared the path for a younger, high-ceiling replacement (like Wirtz).
Managed the risk. It’s percieved to be much easier to find a pacy winger to replace Diaz’s output ( Maybe they are that blind they felt Cody was worth the money Diaz wanted
) than it is to replace a 1-of-1 generational talent like Salah or the leadership of VVD.
No Jozza that's WHY what Justme said - is 'spot on'.
Both Virgil and Mo were 'unsellable assets'. Shouldn't need mention.. Once again Listen to Daniel shut down Neville. He nails it.

we were never going to get money for them? like Steveo said their contracts were up. It was easier to give them the wages and not buy replacements and then also pay the new players wages..Both have been utter tripe since. but you can't really consider that.. all you can see is how they performed last season and that was outstandingOriginally posted by jozza800 View PostLike giving a 33 year old and 34 year old the two biggest contracts the club has ever handed out?Cleaning up the Scots since the 13th century

In hindsight we should have kept Diaz another season and sold him next summer.. but the 70 million was too much to turn down.. we set our sights on Wirtz, knowing teams would sit deeper against us. But to me we've never been good with a number 10.. we've always played well with 3 strong midfielders. Its not easy breaking down teams when they sit just outside their box.. we ain't the only side to struggle against it.
Jurgen seem to have got it right with Bobby in the false 9 role he was good enough to control the game in the opposition half. To me if Wirzt is going to make it, he needs to play that role. hes further up the pitch and closer to goal. rather than trying to play in a formation and pass the ball. it's too slow and doesn't work. again most teams struggle against low blocks.Cleaning up the Scots since the 13th century

Bear with me for a second. Maybe, just maybe, teams in the PL figured that out for themselves? Perhaps someone out of all the managers, coaches and analysts thought it better to sit deep than leave space for pacy attackers to run in behind them.
The only way to hit teams on the break is to have them open up and attack. For that we either need to score the first goal or have a team come to Anfield and be prepared to attack us.
73% possession against the likes of Burnley is not that type of game.

Clear as day Diaz forced through the move, he and his savvy agent know the game, and caused controversy round the time of Jotas funeral before moving on to Bayern.
We've seen it before with players, just a new low point in the business affairs of pro-ballers. I'm happy he's not here anymore.

Clear to who..? A one armed bandit? Face it you know nothing beyond the PR push for the minions. Diaz is on the record saying he wanted to stay and that he loved the club. But he wasn't going to sit their taking half the wages of Cody - I'm not in Diaz's class - Gakp... The Club KNEW he was the one to cash in on and they did.
Your baloney about his actions at the time of Jota's funeral fly in the face of the sentiment made uber clear by Jota's wife..Last edited by Steveo; 20 January 2026, 06:46 PM.

I didn't think he would stay around for long after that, but the fact we didn't replace him is criminal

The fact is Diaz wanted to stay.. He ONLY left because Hughes and Edwards refused to get close to his desired salary.. Which was WAY below the clearly inferior Gakpo..
No surprises that CCTV who felt Gakpo outperformed Salah and Diaz
no really.. is trying to spin the BS..
