The spending was strange. It's very unlike the club to put all our eggs in one/two baskets. VVD and Alisson were two who were known to be world-class so little risk. I suppose the club would argue Wirtz and Isak are similar. Unfortunately with both we haven't seen it yet although I would be one of those who's encouraged by what Wirtz is beginning to show. I would accept your point that for 100m you'd hope he'd hit the ground running. I do think if he could get a couple of goals under his belt and a few clear assists, it would start to click for him. He's almost there and I suppose a lot of fans are just willing him to be that player we want. The other strange thing with Wirtz of course is that he's a different type of player than we really needed.....but who knows if we can get something working with him Isak and Ekitike it could be something to behold hopefully. The attack needed a rebuild as we know.
Right now I see the following players as the required quality:
Ekitike
Grav
Szobo
VVD
Alisson
Frimpong (not fit but looked good when he was)
Bradley when he's on it
Mo when he's on it like last weekend
Jones - suddenly finding great form
Wirtz - almost there
...which isn't bad all things considered. I think the issue is that many haven't been performing at their previous level which has probably drawn attention to issues that otherwise maybe would be less critical. For example, the fact Mo and Macca have been poor all season has put us under pressure in many areas of the pitch which has probably led to konate then sticking out more as a weak area than he might have.
From the moment I picked your book up until I laid it down, I convulsed with laughter. Someday I intend on reading it. Groucho Marx
